Strict Definition

AI Engineering is the applied discipline of designing, constructing, evaluating, deploying, and governing machine learning systems — including large language models — in production environments. It encompasses the full lifecycle from data preparation through model training, evaluation, serving, monitoring, and iterative improvement.

Scope Boundaries

AI Engineering is distinct from AI Research (which produces novel models and algorithms) and from Data Science (which focuses on analysis and insight). AI Engineering is concerned with the reliable, scalable, and safe operation of AI systems as production software.

Exclusions

Excluded from this definition: academic model development without production intent; data analysis and business intelligence; generic software engineering tasks performed on AI projects.
